Sir Raylton Dixon, Middlesbrough (570) for Furness, Withy & Co.

Recognised as the first British deep-sea motorship, she had a Belgian engine by Carels Frères assembled by Richardsons Westgarth, but due to maintenance problems especially during the War it was replaced by a steam engine in 1915. The motor exhausts were led through the kingposts, the thin funnel serving only a donkey boiler.

Captured and sunk by shells from U.45 on 03/02/1917, 95 miles west of Fastnet, Barry for Gibraltar with coal
